Immigrants are not Benefits-Scroungers
Posted on: 30 Aug 2013  |   Tags: Immigrants in Sweden , Sweden Universities ,

It is a fallacy that immigrants in Sweden use public services more than nationals. The myth was busted by researchers from the University of Orebro, who compared native Swedes with people of working age who arrived in the country between 1990 and 2000 (a decade of economic crisis and high unemployment). The results show that one year after arrival, someone born abroad is three times as likely as a local to receive state benefits for the following two years. However, this high probability disappears in the fourth year after arrival. The study used a new research model that focuses on aspects that aren’t traditionally held in consideration, such as personality, attitude, social background and culture. This data is combined with indicators such as gender, age, work experience and residential neighborhood. To eliminate the gap seen during the first few years of immigration, the experts recommend the adoption of measures that allow immigrants quicker entry into the labour market.
